Instrumental and Friendship Networking Between Swedes and Expats
Abstract: This research paper concerns factors influencing interpersonal intercultural networking. More specifically, it covers the intercultural formation of instrumental relationships and friendships between Swedes and expats residing in Sweden. In order to investigate the influence that some selected mediators have on the formation of instrumental relationships and friendships, the study examines eight different relationship formations: (1) expats forming instrumental relationships with Swedes, (2) expats forming instrumental relationships with expats, (3) Swedes forming instrumental relationships with expats, (4) Swedes forming instrumental relationships with Swedes, (5) expats forming friendships with Swedes, (6) expats forming friendships with expats, (7) Swedes forming friendships with expats, and (8) Swedes forming friendships with Swedes. Two studies were conducted in order to capture factors having an impact on these relationships and assess if there is a difference in how the various groups view each other in terms of these factors. Firstly, a pre-study was made to facilitate interview questions. Secondly, a qualitative study was conducted where participants were asked to recall and describe a scenario where they initiated an interaction for the purpose of forming an instrumental relationship or friendship. The main findings of this study are the following: (1) for all groups, warmth is the most important mediator for the intention and formation of forming friendships, (2) for all groups, perceived competence is the most important mediator for the intention and formation of forming instrumental relationships, followed by power and prestige, and (3) many personal values were appreciated by participants in professional relationships, especially warmth. While some findings are congruent with those of previous studies, they also give new insights in the formation of intercultural relationships, especially between Swedes and expats in Sweden. Furthermore they bring value in the research field of interpersonal and intercultural forming of both instrumental relationships and friendships.
