Sköldpaddsdammen som en naturlig oas på Mallorca : en fallstudie

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (from 130101)

Abstract: This study shows how to plan a pond with an ecosystem which although it will have turtles living in it will not need to be cared. I will also demonstrate how this pond would be designed to work in the natural landscape on Mallorca. The background to the study is that I am interested to investigate how plants that we in Sweden are using as indoor plants are growing in their natural landscape and how to build a land-scape with them. The study highlights different cleaning-systems that can be used to clean a pond in a natural way. A comparison will be made between the conditions of an exterminated turtle-species which will live in this environment and a species that is easier to care for. The target with this study was to see if it is possible to plan a space for this exterminated species in a way that it is able to work effectively in the natural landscape on Mallorca. The method I used to determine this was to interview different people who were competent in the fields of turtles, natural-ponds and the plants on Mallorca. I did a literature study about Mallorca, natural pond-systems, and turtles and also made an inventory of the place and drove around Mallorca to study the profile, made a sketch-proposal and produced a report. The outcome that my range of different research produced is: 1. It is difficult to make the place look part of the natural landscape because: • the turtle is very sensitive to predators and therefore needs to be enclosed. 2. It is difficult to make the space in no need of artificial care and intervention because: • the turtles eat the plants which need to be there to ensure that no weeds appear; • the water quality is not good; • the stone species is too porous making it easy for the bacterium to grow in the water. It is possible that the natural system needs to be changed or to be complemented with a technical system instead in the future. More research about water quality and water cleaning on Mallorca is necessary in this area.
