The Functions of Noda
Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to give a descriptive overview of the Japanese nominal predicate no da. The structure is looked at mainly through two separate perspectives; one investigating its modal properties and one investigating its influence on the information structure within its scope. A collection of data heavily dependent upon Japanese sources, as to make available information otherwise not readily found, has been made. As an extension of this data, research has been conducted through the use an informant and the conduction of a survey. The research concerns the comparison of no da with other structures, as a means to identify what nuances that may be considered unique to no da.
