Abstract: Abstract Lakes and streams constitute important habitats for many organisms. These environments are also valuable for recreation and health for human beings. The aim of the shoreline protection legislation is to protect shores from settlements so that natural and recreational values are conserved. Areas with high values may have an extended shoreline protection of a maximum of 300 meters. The purpose of this investigation is to examine if there are enough motives to retain an extended shoreline protection along lakes and streams in Hässleholm council. The assessment of natural and recreational values was made during a survey of 31 lakes and streams which all have an extended shoreline protection. Map layers and aerial photographs were analysed to provide complementary information for the field survey. The results show that the current extended shoreline protection can be retained at Möllerödssjön, Vittsjön, Västra sjö, Malsjön, Skeingesjön, Almaån, Hörlingeån, Röke å, Vinne å, Sjöbergasjön, Bosarpasjön and Vieån, which all have high natural and recreational values. The protection should also be retained at Pickelsjön, Mellansjön, Gängessjön, Lilla sjö, Höjalasjön, Boaltsjön and Grösjön, since these lakes either contribute to recreational nature or have surroundings too waterlogged for settlements. The current shoreline protection can be reduced at the following lakes, where the natural and recreational values are low: Bröna sjö, Vejshulta gyl, Brunnshulta gyl, Värsjön, Vegesjö, Östra sjö, Kallsjön, Tydingen and Ballingslövssjön.
