INVESTIGATING THE EKC HYPOTHESIS IN SUB SAHARA AFRICA : The role of tourism
Abstract: This thesis attempts to investigate the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and examine the role of tourism in environmental pollution in the region. The study applies panel data from 28 Sub-Saharan African countries for the period 1995-2014. Using pooled OLS, fixed effects, and random effects, the study analyzed the relationship between CO2 emissions as a proxy for environmental quality and GDP per capita, the square of GDP per capita, energy consumption, and tourism. The outcomes from this thesis indicate that the EKC hypothesis is valid for Sub-Saharan Africa, and tourism is not a significant determinant of environmental degradation in the region. The study concludes that national and international environmental protection agreements should be signed by the Sub-Saharan African countries, clean technology and energy efficiency should be prioritized to enhance green growth in the region.
