Abstract: The thesis covers the design and simulations of surface roughness and under etching of
a simple trace. It shows how the surface roughness and under etching aects the electrical
signal attenuation of the trace and hence the eect on the signal propagation along the
trace. The simulations shows that the greater the roughness the greater the loss. The
same is true for the under etching. Furthermore it shows that the discretization of the
trace needs to be small when the frequency goes up. This correlates with the skin eect.
It also compares some measurements made on traces with the simulations. There was
no clear correlation between the results. This is most probably due to the dicult task of
measuring high frequency signals.
The conclusion of the thesis is that the simulations correlates well with the theories
but that some further studies needs to be done.
