Simulation of spillways with the CFD software code_saturne

Abstract: EDF operates 433 hydroelectric facilities throughout France, which must comply with strict safety rules. Spillways are one of the main components of hydraulic structures which ensure their safety in the event of a flood, by releasing flood water. Currently their shape is only based on empirical studies, and EDF aims at improving their design for better performance and safety. This is the goal of Fatna Oukaili's PhD work, who is creating a shape optimisation algorithm for spillways using the Computational Fluid Dynamics software code_saturne.The purpose of this master's thesis is to validate the code for 3D flows and study the physical phenomenon of flow separation from the weir to help Fatna Oukaili adapting her algorithm from 2D to 3D.
