Den iranska kvinnans status : demografisk studie ur ett socialistiskt radikalfeministiskt perspektiv

University essay from Lunds universitet/Mänskliga rättigheter

Abstract: Women have in most societies around the world more or less always been subordinate to men. To add to the debate on how to address this problem from one more dimension this paper examines how demographic factors affect the status of females with the help of the following research questions; How does the correlations appear between the changes in demographic factors and changes regarding women’s status in the Iranian society since the revolution of 1979? and how can this be analyzed from a socialist radical feminist perspective? By examining the case of Iran with demographic tools the paper attempts to, through a gender perspective, find indicators on changes in female status. The paper examines five different demographic categories; Education and employment, fertility, age at marriage and family structure and finally the sociopolitical group youth. This paper acknowledges that there are many demographic factors that affect women’s situation in Iran and that the country is becoming more and more equal and aware of the patriarchal structures. It also notes that this to a high degree varies contextually and that demography is only one of the factors that affect the status of females in a society.
