Abstract: In closed institutions, such as prisons, the inmates are locked up and therefore unable to perform an unassisted evacuation in case of fire. Since the assistance of the prison staff is required to escort every inmate to safety, often one at the time evacuation is a time consuming task. The report deals with the issue of whether the conditions in Swedish prisons today regarding evacuation in the case of fire are acceptable or not. The report is divided into three main sections. First, laws and regualtions that applies to the topic is presented. In the next section a prior accident is reviewed in order to draw conclusions from earlier experiences. Finally the in the main section a study of the present situation in a closed institution is performed. In this analyze two fire is located in the assembly room which is part of the prison corridor. Computer simulation and calculations gives the time available for evacuation before critical conditions arise. Interviews with prison staff has been carried out in purpose to gather enough infromation to be able to calculate and estimate the time needed for evacuation. These two times time to critical conditions and time to complete evacuation, is compared. Finally advices and recommmendations which aims to increase the security for personal and inmates are given.
