From caravelas to telenovelas : Popular culture, cultural exchange and cultural appropriation

Abstract: Brazilian telenovelas have always been very popular in Portugal but in the last years this popularity is decreasing. It seems Portuguese audiences prefer Portuguese telenovelas instead. Why is this so? Within the context of the relationship between Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese identity and theories of cultural exchange and cultural appropriation, this essay, through interviews to ten different subjects, tries to analyse why this is happening.
