Illustrationer av landskapsarkitektur

University essay from SLU/Landscape Architecture (until 121231)

Abstract: This bachelor thesis discusses three Swedish landscape architects and their plan drawings and illustrations. The landscape architects are from the 18th century, the 19th century respectively the 20th century. The three persons are: Fredrik Magnus Piper, Knut Forsberg and Gunnar Martinsson. The landscape architects are brought up in chronological order in a chapter each where the person’s life, educations and work are described. Following is a description of three plan drawings and three other illustrations like perspectives, this with the exception of Forsberg, I haven’t found any other illustrations made by him. The chapters are completed with a summary and reflections on the pictures. There is a vast collection of drawings left by Fredrik Magnus Piper. He was a very talented artist and painter. Many of his illustrations are watercoloured pen- or ink drawings. He built his pictures with the help of different colours and hues to create light, shadows and depth. The artistic collection left by Piper is a unique document of garden art from the 18th century. Knut Forsberg is not as known as the two others and there isn’t as many pictures by him left. He had learned the technique of watercolour and used the colours to build up his plan drawings and to make beautiful presentations. Gunnar Martinsson has a very distinct style and has in particular made many black and white line drawings. He illustrated his two own garden books with examples of plan drawings and perspectives of different gardens. With this thesis I would like to give examples of how Swedish landscape architects have illustrated landscape architecture during different times.
