  1. 1. Using biological conversion to increase the value of short-chain fatty acids by mixed cultures

    University essay from Högskolan i Borås/Akademin för textil, teknik och ekonomi

    Author : Elisabeth Beach; [2023]
    Keywords : Ethanol; Mixed culture; Volatile fatty acids; Anaerobic digestion;

    Abstract : The development of anaerobic digestion processes has gained recognition for its potential for producing volatile fatty acids alongside bio-alcohols. In addition, the fermentation process and the products produced from biological fermentation have the possibility to overcome the abundance of organic waste in our society, which is potentially immensely rich in untapped valuable potential products. 3. 3. Crystallization, optimization, and crystal structure determination of ligands in complex with galectin-8N

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Kemiska institutionen

    Author : George Larsson; [2022]
    Keywords : Biochemistry; Structural Biochemistry; Galectin-8; Protein Crystallization; Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the protein “galectin-8N” which is a lectin protein that takes part in several physiological functions such as inflammation, autophagy, cell migration, and more. The project has three objectives: to observe and increase the reproducibility of crystallization of two variants (wildtype and mutant) of the human protein galectin-8N and to analyze the binding site when three different novel ligands are each inserted. 4. 4. Analysis of polyfunctional thiols in beer : Developing a novel method of extraction and analysis using GC-FID

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Livsmedelsteknik och nutrition (master)

    Author : Arvid Lindmark; [2022]
    Keywords : Beer; Hops; Thiols; 3MHA; 4MMP; Food Technology; Agriculture and Food Sciences;

    Abstract : In this project, attempts were made to identify and quantify two polyfunctional thiols – 4-mercapto-4-methyl-pentanone and 3-mercaptohexyl acetate – and three monoterpene alcohols – linalool, geraniol, and β-citronellol – in beer samples. In order to avoid the use of hazardous compounds such as dichloromethane and hydroxymercuriobenzoate, common in traditional methods, two novel techniques were tested: a pure liquid-liquid extraction of the beer samples with cyclohexane, and a liquid-liquid extraction with cyclohexane followed by solid phase extraction on silver ion columns. 5. 5. Production of 5-ketogluconic acid using recombinant strains of Gluconobacter oxydans

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Bioteknik (CI); Lunds universitet/Bioteknik (master)

    Author : Aakash Reddy Murugadasan; [2022]
    Keywords : Gluconobacter oxydans; Escherichia coli; 5-Keto-D-gluconic acid; Alcohol dehydrogenase; Biotechnology; Biology and Life Sciences;

    Abstract : 5-Keto-D-gluconic acid (5-KGA) is a valuable compound that has a wide range of applications in the chemical and food industries and is commonly used as a precursor for manufacturing tartaric acid (TA). Industrial production of 5-KGA through chemical approaches was practiced in the early 1920’s and was dropped immediately due to several drawbacks because of its complicated process that resulted in lower 5-KGA yield and higher accumulation of impure gluconic acid.
