  1. 1. Gravitational Collapse of a Massless Scalar Field in a Theory of Minimally Modified Gravity

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Atabak Fathe Jalali; [2024]
    Keywords : Theoretical physics; astrophysics; modified gravity; minimally modified gravity; gravitational collapse; VCDM; scalar collapse; apparent horizon; numerical relativity; Teoretisk fysik; astrofysik; modifierad gravitation; minimalt modifierad gravitation; gravitationskollaps; VCDM; skalär kollaps; uppenbar horisont; numerisk relativitet;

    Abstract : This thesis explores the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in a minimally modified gravity theory denoted VCDM (V replaces $\Lambda$ in the $\Lambda$CDM abbreviation), a class of theories propagating the same degrees of freedom as general relativity at the expense of broken 4D diffeomorphism invariance. Numerical evolution of the equations of motion reveals that for small initial scalar profile amplitudes, no black hole forms from the collapse. READ MORE

  2. 2. Sympathy in Plotinus

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Avdelningen för teoretisk filosofi

    Author : Oscar Jablon; [2024]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I make intelligible Plotinus’ notion of sympathy by explicating the cause of sympathy within Plotinus’ universe and the effects of sympathy. I do this by using a framework inspired by the Stoic literature on sympathy which distinguishes between three interrelated features of sympathy: Unity, global sympathy, and local sympathy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Quantum Optical Description of High-order Harmonic Generation

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Atomfysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Isabel Moreno; [2024]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : High-order Harmonic Generation (HHG) is a highly non-linear process in which an atom interacts with a strong laser field. The laser field lowers the atomic potential barrier allowing bound electrons to escape into the continuum through tunnel ionization, propagate, and, with some probability, recombine with the parent ion. 4. 4. Development of a guide system for free neutron oscillation searches at the European Spallation Source

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen; Lunds universitet/Lunds Tekniska Högskola; Lunds universitet/European Spallation Source ESS AB

    Author : Linnéa Björk; [2023]
    Keywords : ESS; neutrons; dark matter; antimatter; neutron guides; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : In this project, a neutron delivery system for the study of free neutron oscillations at the HIBEAM beamline at the European Spallation Source (ESS) has been developed. The HIBEAM experiment is part of a two-stage program at ESS which will address open questions in physics; specifically the nature of dark matter and the observed asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. 5. 5. Glauber Monte Carlo for proton-proton and virtual-photon-proton collisions

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen; Lunds universitet/Teoretisk partikelfysik - Geonomgår omorganisation

    Author : Oscar Sepp; [2023]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : In high energy physics, we want to probe the inner structures and behaviours of the particles that are the building blocks of our universe. This is often done by colliding nuclei together. READ MORE
