Abstract: The current workflow in the industry when designing a Data Warehousing project typically only considers preconceived and defined architectures instead of a more granular approach more appropriate to address the real needs of an organization. To showcase the problems of these data warehousing architectural models and lead us to the factors to consider, we perform a qualitative comparison of the main Data Warehousing architectures, with emphasis on the Data Vault characteristics, and a benchmark on the most emblematic layers of the different types discussed with a normalized source of data to be ingested to aid in the comprehension. The study demonstrates that no model is perfect for all projects in the industry and should not be viewed as an atomic proposal. Instead, we derive the factors that must motivate a proper plan to devise a storage solution; laying the foundation for future quantitative research on the matter.
