Chilean working holiday participants in Sweden: Exploring intentions and motivations

University essay from Handelshögskolan i Stockholm/Institutionen för företagande och ledning

Abstract: This investigation explores the motivations and intentions of young nationals of Chile migrating to Sweden under a working holiday visa. This qualitative study intends to visualize and understand the ground for this type of migration to complement the theoretical framework on migration to predict the impact of this type of migration and generate policies that can satisfy the intentions of the countries involved. The findings suggest that the original cultural spirit of this visa is not met and there are economical motivations that drive their actions and also, the group is heterogeneous in terms of their intended migration and I have split them into three groups: Willing Migrants, Opportunistic Migrants, and Temporary Wanderers. By splitting the group, it's easier to relate them to previous migration theories, although none of them fits completely into the ones reviewed in this investigation. I finally reflect on some macro and business implications base on the findings and suggest further areas of investigation for this -understudied and increasing- type of migration.
