Small but Mighty: A qualitative study investigating characteristics of SMEs in their utilisation of ICT for sustainability

Abstract: This master's thesis seeks to address the problems associated with the utilisation of sustainable Information Communication Technologies (ICT) by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), due to various barriers such as cost, limited resources, and lack of awareness. The research question seeks to examine the internal factors and characteristics of SMEs that influence their utilisation of ICT for sustainability. The purpose of this study is to highlight characteristics and internal factors of SMEs by focusing on SMEs sustainability initiatives and projects, and to provide a snapshot on their views on sustainability in general. This thesis takes a qualitative approach by interviewing representatives from various companies. Conclusion reveals six influential characteristics: Investment and resources, Agility, Risk behaviour and risk management, Innovation, Business strategy, and Knowledge sharing and collaboration. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by filling the gap in research and shedding light on the characteristics of SMEs that influence their utilisation of ICT for sustainability. The findings highlight the interconnectedness of these factors and their significance in improving the sustainability performance of SMEs. Additionally, the thesis proposes future research, such as examining SME networks in utilising ICT for sustainability and investigating the negative impacts of ICT on sustainability.
