Abstract: As the world of smart cities is expanding at an accelerated pace, companies need to understand and evaluate the opportunities that open up to them. The solar street light: FASCOM has been created by SIARQ to facilitate the transition from a city to a smart city. Its function is to provide energy and shelter to smart city devices on top of its basic illumination purpose. The first part of the thesis considers five examples to estimate the FASCOM position in the smart city environment. It unveils FASCOM’s ecosystem that has already been studied by a European project called the Humble Lamppost. It explains how additional value can be created by adding the Bluetooth technology inside the device and why the current Li-Fi technology should not be integrated into the device. The second part of the thesis helps SIARQ to determine which European Living Laboratory is most suitable to develop further its FASCOM in a real life environment. After grading the laboratories against aset of criteria, the Lighting Living Lab of Portugal has been selected as the most promising facility.
