  1. 1. Shallow near-surface lapse rates and their connection to glacier meteorology on Storglaciären and Rabots glaciär, Northern Sweden

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi

    Author : Moon Taveirne; [2022]
    Keywords : Temperature lapse rate; glacier meteorology; near-surface lapse rate; ablation gradient;

    Abstract : Glacier melt is strongly impacted by climate and meteorology. Temperature lapse rates are used to model glacier melt, and the accuracy of the spatial distribution of modelled melt can be impacted by the lapse rate used in modelling. Additionally, the observed spatial distribution of melt is highly temporally variable. READ MORE

  2. 2. Meteorological Investigation of Preconditions for Extreme-Scale Wind Turbines in Scandinavia

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Christoffer Hallgren; [2013]
    Keywords : extreme-scale wind turbines; wind power; wind power density; wind atlas; MERRA; reanalysis data; extremskaliga vindkraftverk; vindkraft; vindenergidensitet; vindatlas; MERRA; återanalysdata;

    Abstract : During the last three decades, the hub height of wind turbines has increased from 24 to 162 meters and with an increasing demand for break-through innovations in green energy production it seems likely that this trend will continue. The meteorological preconditions for extreme-scale wind turbines are investigated for Scandinavia using 33 years of reanalysis data from MERRA (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications). 3. 3. An Analysis of the Local Weather Around Longyearbyen and an Instrumental Comparison

    University essay from Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Charlotta Petersson; [2007]
    Keywords : meteorology; Svalbard; the Arctic; Longyearbyen; local weather; channeling effects; sea breeze; inversion; case study; instrumental comparison;

    Abstract : Three different studies have been made; an analysis of the general weather situation at three weather stations in Svalbard, close to the main settlement Longyearbyen; an instrumental comparison between three weather stations operating at nearly the same place during a few days in October 2006; and a case study of a weather station at the mountain Breinosa compared to the station in the valley beneath. The analysis of the general weather at the three stations, Adventdalen (data used from 2004-2006), Svalbard Airport (data used from 1994-2004) and Gruvefjellet (data used from 2002-2005) showed that it is clear that the local surroundings do contribute to a more locally produced weather. 4. 4. Modelling the Wind Climate in Mountain Valleys Using the MIUU Mesoscale Model

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Nikolaus Juuso; [2002]
    Keywords : MIUU model; wind climate; mountain meteorology;

    Abstract : High average wind speeds have been measured in many valleys. The reasons for these high winds are channelling effects of two physical origins, forced channelling and pressure driven channelling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Visualization of the airflow over a three-dimensional hill

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Meteorologiska institutionen

    Author : Andreas Livbom; [1997]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : A numerical modell has been developed at the Department of Meteorology, Uppsala University. The purpose has been to calculate streamline displacements for linear, hydrostatic flow over a three-dimensional hill and to visualize the characteristics of the flow. READ MORE
