Social media as a tool for revolution. : Social media's role in the Iranian protests and the Jasmine Revolution.

University essay from Linnéuniversitetet/Institutionen för samhällsstudier (SS)

Abstract: This thesis studies the role of Social Media in the ongoing Iranian protests through an analysis of social media in past conflicts, namely the Jasmine Revolution. The studies’ objective is to debate how social media constitutes a tool for revolution in the two cases, and in what ways it can be used as one in similar situations. Both conflicts will be analysed, the relevance of a comparison between the two will be brought forward, and a set of patterns of social medias’ use will be identified and analysed. Because the Iranian protests are so recent, the choice of analysing a past conflict where social media played a key role, and applying the theoretical and conceptual patterns identified in said conflict to the current protests was made.
