Behandling av sommareksem hos häst med cetirizin : ett fältförsök

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Clinical Sciences

Abstract: In this study we intend to evaluate the effect of cetirizin, orally administrated to horses with insect dermal hypersensitivity. The study comprised 156 horses from 49 farms, which were located in different parts of Sweden. The horses were matched on the farms and were given cetirizin or placebo in a double blind test. Veterinarians collected a blood sample and examined the horses visually, before and after three weeks of treatment and filled in given forms. The results are based on the veterinarians' subjective evaluation of the clinical appearance of the allergic dermatitis before and after treatment. The results indicate that cetirizin does not have the desired effect on allergic dermatitis since no difference between the groups could be established.
