Abstract: Abstract Purpose: The study sought to gain insight into the intra-organizational challenges faced by multinational enterprises during the implementation process of Sustainable Development Goals as well as to investigate internal communication and organizational strategies. Furthermore, the study provided recommendations to improve organizational performance regarding sustainability. Design, methodology, and theoretical approach: Extensive literature research was carried out, which was followed by an empirical study. Three theories were selected as part of the theoretical framework; Experiential Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, and Problematic Integration Theory. Moreover, a new conceptual model was constructed connecting the three theories on the common base of communication. Qualitative research was conducted focusing on interviews provided by sustainability experts within several multinational enterprises in different countries. Findings: Four main categories were identified concerning challenges that multinational enterprises face regarding the implementation of the sustainable development goals into their business practices; integration, communication, lack of knowledge and organizational learning challenges. Furthermore organizational learning and communication strategies were identified through the conducted interviews as crucial to overcome the obstacles within the organizations. Principal recommendation: Fostering a sense of urgency and commitment toward the 2030 Agenda by proactive communication and education is recommended. Moreover, investing in sustainability training for top management to possess the necessary knowledge and skills to guide the organization toward sustainable strategies and practices effectively is suggested.
