    Abstract : Since its composition two centuries ago in 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (Ode to Joy) has been heralded the world over not only as a great work of art, but also as a symbol of political importance. In Germany, it was lionised as the embodiment of a national spirit, first during the Franco-Prussian war, then as a prize of the Nazi repertoire; in Rhodesia, it became the national anthem of a far-right white ethno-state, while on the far-left, it occupied a rare position of Western revolutionary music in China.     Abstract : The rise of radical right-wing populism in Western Europe has severely altered the political landscape during the last decade, and mainstream parties, from left to right, are struggling to employ strategies preventing voters from deserting to the radical right. In this thesis, I examine two mainstream parties in the context of Sweden, the Social Democratic party (S), and the Moderate party (M), to learn what strategies the parties have applied in the light of rising radical right-wing populism, relating to two issue-dimensions: the socio-cultural and the socio-economic. Although voters may not discern threats from trade shocks, individual economic insecurity theoretically impacts cultural attitudes and sparks a backlash towards outgroups, in turn contributing to right-wing candidates that campaign leveraging intolerance.
