The effects of collaborative learning in developing speaking skills

University essay from Malmö universitet/Institutionen för kultur, språk och medier (KSM)

Abstract: This study aims to investigate how collaborative learning can be used and what it means when using it as a tool for producing better speaking skills. Speaking is one of the four important skills when it comes to learning English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language and one might argue that it is the most important part of the English language as you use it the most when producing the English language as a Second Language learner in situations that require you to. Collaboration can be one of the most efficient ways to enhance the competence of various students when implementing it in numerous ways which this study will show and investigate. With this chosen area, I want to deepen my knowledge upon how collaborative learning can either help, or inhibit the students from developing their speaking skills and how effective it might be and what problems might occur with implementing collaborative learning exercises. In the syllabus for English in grades 7-9 in Sweden, one of the goals is that the students are to be given opportunities to develop a communicative ability as well as to understand spoken language and adapt themselves to different situations, purposes and receivers (Skolverket, 2022). For this essay, different papers have been collected through databases. The papers have then been reviewed and been connected to the research questions.
