University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi; Lunds universitet/LUMID International Master programme in applied International Development and Management

Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to examine the impact of climate change on the rights of children with disabilities and the development of their capabilities in Cambodia. Children with disabilities are one of the most marginalized groups in any society and one of the most affected by climate change. Using the social-ecological model and the capability approach, this paper analyzes participants' stories collected in interviews to better understand how we can fulfill the rights of children with disabilities in a changing climate and what barriers exist for them to develop their capabilities. The findings show that while children with disabilities are highly affected by climate change, their needs are rarely met due to lack of awareness, resources, knowledge and inclusion. The voices of children with disabilities are rarely considered and in most cases children with disabilities are not represented in government and civil society efforts on climate change. Much remains to be done to fulfill the rights and development of children with disabilities capabilities in the context of climate change.
