Abstract: The aim of this study is to introduce the design and implementation process of a Virtual Reality (VR) carbon emissions calculator game, with the goal of educating and encouraging participation in carbon offsetting activities. The objective of the game is to increase users' awareness of carbon footprints and environmental protection, and motivate them to adopt sustainable behaviors. To achieve this goal, we developed a game platform based on VR technology, where users can calculate their own carbon emissions through virtual environments. In the envisioned full version of the game, players can simulate their carbon emissions by selecting different daily life scenarios such as housing, transportation, and diet. This project specifically focused on developing a carbon emissions calculator for transportation, where players input the mileage of their chosen vehicles and the game calculates and displays the carbon emissions associated with their transportation choices. Through two rounds of game evaluations involving a group of participants, we assessed the comprehensiveness of the game, compared it with a web-based version, and examined its impact on carbon emissions education. The results of the study indicate that users who engaged with the game exhibited greater environmentally friendly behavior after becoming aware of the importance of carbon emissions. In conclusion, this VR carbon calculator game provides users with an entertaining and educational tool to promote the adoption of sustainable lifestyles. By enhancing users' environmental awareness and behavioral changes, we can make a contribution to reducing carbon emissions and driving sustainable development.
