Sensorless Field-Oriented Control and Position Estimation

Abstract: This master's thesis investigates the feasibility of implementing field-oriented control for a BLDC motor without relying on a position sensor from a standstill up to 400 rad/s. To achieve this objective, various approaches were used at standstill and high speeds. The high-frequency injection method was used at standstill and lower speeds, while a method based on estimated magnetic flux was utilized at higher speeds to estimate the position of the rotor. To evaluate these methods, model-based programming in Matlab and Simulink was done. The crucial aspects of these methods are elaborated in detail in this thesis work. For real-time execution, the implementation was converted into C code using TargetLink and subsequently flashed onto the ECU. This master's thesis was performed in collaboration with BorgWarner Sweden AB in Landskrona, Sweden.
