Abstract: Concrete is an important material for building a sustainable society, serving as the foundation of modern infrastructure. Concrete’s widespread adoption in both commercial and residential construction projects can be attributed to its exceptional versatility, strength, durability, and long-lasting qualities. Construction companies rely on concrete as a reliable and enduring material, making it one of the most widely utilized choices in the industry. However, the production of cement, a vital component of concrete, contributes significantly to carbon dioxide emissions, posing a challenge to achieving climate goals by 2045.To address this challenge, the adoption of climate-improved concrete is essential for the ongoing climate transition in the construction and civil engineering sector. While alternative materials like wood can replace concrete in some instances, many structures necessitate the unique qualities and durability offered by concrete. This thesis aims to explore the potential for mitigating carbon dioxide emissions inthe construction industry by implementing intelligent design choices and utilizing eco-friendly materials. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive case study was conducted focusing on climate-improved concrete structures. The case study is based on simplified hand calculation with the support of programs such as concrete column and frame analysis. It examined various aspects of concrete structures, includingdifferent design scenarios and climate data bases aimed at minimizing the CO2 foot-print. The studies indicate, considering the limitations and simplifications made, that potential CO2 emissions reductions of approximately 45% can be achieved. The results of the study highlight the feasibility of achieving substantial reductions in carbon dioxide emissions in concrete structures through the adoption of innovative materials and design strategies. This emphasizes the significance of considering the environmental impact of construction materials and the urgent need to prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives.Overall, this research provides valuable insights into how the construction industry can actively contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change. By incorporating smart design choices and environmentally conscious materials, a significantly reducing of carbon emissions associated with concrete structures can be achieved while promoting a more sustainable and environmentally friendly construction sector.
