Nackas framtid - En riskanalys för gentrifiering i samband med tunnelbanetillgänglighet

University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi

Abstract: The municipality of Nacka is undergoing major urban development and transformation which is part of the project [Nacka becomes a city] which includes new developments of housing, commercial property, and shopping areas aimed to make Nacka a city. The project is driven by the expansion of the Stockholm metro system which is getting extended to Nacka. Such major changes of an urban area in correlation to the development of urban transit networks raises concerns regarding the concept of transport induced gentrification. The concept of transport induced gentrification describes the phenomenon that arises when land use change is caused by proximity to transit which leads to increased rents and living costs. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the risks of gentrification in Nacka in relation to the area of influence of the upcoming subway stations. It did so by first composing a social status index which was used as an empirical database for GIS-analysis to identify the risk areas. Additionally, different planning documents regarding the Nacka project were examined to further determine the gentrification risks for each separate neighbourhood. The results indicate that the risk of gentrification is high in the areas of Henriksdal, Talliden, Jarlaberg and Skvaltan.
