  1. 1. Data driven fuzzy suitability modelling as a method for assessing habitat choice of migratory Red Kites (Milvus, milvus) across Spain

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : John-William Monks; [2019]
    Keywords : Physical Geography and Ecosystems analysis; Fuzzy suitability; GIS; Red Kite; Suitability modelling; Conservation; Habitat choice; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : As an increasing number of species drift onto the IUCN’s list of endangered species, it has become increasingly important to understand the fundamental aspects that are essential in maintaining the fitness of these threatened species. Using tracking data from 75% of a sample of Swiss juvenile Red Kites during their wintering period in Spain, various bioclimatic predictors (BCMPs) were taken into account to create fuzzy membership functions based on the spatial distribution of the related biogeographic elements within the operating range of the sample set of kites.     Keywords : probabilistisk riskbedömning; toppredatorer; DDT; diklordifenyltrikloretan; plantskola; skogsplantskola; artkänslighetsfördelning; bioackumulering; förorenad mark; indirekt exponering; Monte Carlo simulering; probabilistic risk assessment; plant nursery; species sensitivity distribution; polluted soil; indirect exposure; bioaccumulation; Monte Carlo simulation; dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Although prohibited since decades, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites still remain in the soil and pose a threat to ecosystems, where especially birds are susceptible to toxic effects. In this thesis, a model developed in the 1990s was used and updated in order to estimate the risks of DDT to top predators at a forest-plant nursery site. READ MORE
