Fallstudie av mellanrummen i stadsdelen Ålidhems offentliga utemiljöer

Abstract: This diploma-work assess the public outdoor space. It has its starting point in, Ålidhem, a town district of Umeå. I have been studying public spaces in the outdoor environment. In this essay this refers to the spaces between the houses. What they are, what they contain, how they function and how they can improved. The focus has been on describing what's important in the spaces between the houses and how one can think in order to design a good outdoor environment. I have chosen to define a "good outdoor environment" as an environment that is social, safe, rich in experiences, aesthetic and has an identity. The vegetation is an important part in order to achieve a good environment. Since the vegetation and its functions, impacts and development constitutes a big part of our outdoor environment it has been one of the sources who inspired this report. In my report I have noticed which sort of vegetation one could use in the spaces between the houses. The inventory and analysis for Ålidhem illustrates and describe the architects intentions with the area, how it turned out to be and how it looks today (see chapters 3 "Stadsdelen Ålidhem"). The inventory part shows details on the areas design, traffic situation, playgrounds and how the area is used. Meeting places, people's movement, landmarks and the feeling of a place is also declared in the inventory. As a complement to literature and field studies have the people in the area participated trough a questionnaire dispatch, see annex 1, s 112. Svensk Markservice who has the management responsibillity for the area has also been asked about their situation/ opinion. The aspects that I have chosen to study and has an influence on the environment is presented and verified through literature and research (chapter 2 "Stadens mellanrum" and chapter 4 "Principer för gestaltning av offentliga rum"). In these chapters, I present why and how important it is to arrange places for meetings and activities but also places there one can be alone, all in order to create a social and genial outdoor environment. When summarizing the inventory and analys the outdoor environment in Ålidhem can be described as monotonous and worn with many large, open, "poor" surfaces. In my report I present what is needed to create a safe environment. To achieve a safe environment it is important with an environment that is clean and fresh. It is also important to adapt good lightning and create an interesting, detailed environment without losing the opportunities to have a good view over the street/place. But above all that the humane presence is needed in order to call forth the feeling of being safe. A environment which is rich in experiences consist of a certain amount of details and has an interesting content that catch your attention. Furthermore, my work present the aesthetic attractive environment as an environment with a certain harmony and balance. On the knowledge that an atmosphere in harmony and balance is easy for us to read and to understand. What we recognize and understand is also easier to care about and enjoy. An environment who has a defined identity and character is simple to feel at ease in. You can also find your way home and trough the area in a characteristic environment. That kind of environment increases the status of the district which also create a value for those who live there and therefore creates a good outdoor environment. The principles who shows how to create better outdoor spaces and is concentrated to chapters 4. They are based on those inventories and analyses has been done in the town part Ålidhem. The conclusion chapter include a suggestion and an example on how to design a part of Ålidhem in order to create "good design". The suggestion applicate thoughts and principles that I discussed earlier. Through one new design with respect for ambient buildings I have decided to retain the simplicity and cleanness that characters Ålidhem but with a better spatial feeling. The suggestion also have a better feeling for the direction of the street and it defines the use of the street in a better way than in other spaces in this area.
