Efficiency in the Cuban sugar industry after the
restructuring in 2002

University essay from Luleå/Industriell ekonomi och samhällsvetenskap

Abstract: The sugar is no longer a determining factor in the Cuban economy, but yet
stills an important factor. In August 2002 there was an official
announcement that a reformation was going to take place and change the
nation’s sugar industry to a more profitable industry. The purpose of this
thesis was to examine if the Cuban sugar industry has become more efficient
in producing sugar, according to different measures of efficiency through a
qualitative approach. Cuban statistics has been studied and compared
between the years before and after the restructure, this with respect to the
measures of productive efficiency and efficiency measurements proposed by
Farrell. The overall result showed that the restructuring has lead to a
less efficient production in the Cuban sugar industry.
