  1. 6. Investigation of coarse-grid CFD approach for nuclear engineering application

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Michela Casarella; [2023]
    Keywords : Thermal-hydraulics; Nuclear reactor; CFD; Sub-channel; Coarse-grid; Turbulence; Pressure drop; Termisk-hydraulik; kärnreaktor; CFD; underkanal; grovkornigt nät; turbulens; tryckfall;

    Abstract : In this thesis, an innovative coarse grid CFD approach is developed that aims toexploit the capabilities of sub-channel codes and CFD methods while overcoming theirlimitations. In the approach, a very coarse mesh is implemented in the CFD softwareOpenFOAM and a new wall treatment, based on the traditional concept of the wallfunction, is applied to the wall boundary conditions of the domain to take into accountthe low resolution of the grid which does not allow to effectively capture the effect of thesolid walls on the thermo-hydraulics of the flow. 2. 7. Assessment of the integration of solar heat power into food drying processes

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för energivetenskaper

    Author : Charalampos Psilopoulos; [2023]
    Keywords : Sustainable; sustainability; co2 reduction; feasibility; solar thermal; direct steam generation; drying; food industry; scope 1 emissions; sdg; sustainable development goals; spray drying; drum drying; powder; food; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : The long-lasting usage of fossil fuels has brought its negative impact on the planet and thus the society is turning towards more environmentally sustainable solutions in every aspect of life. This master’s thesis discusses the novel topic of integrating concentrated solar thermal collectors, which directly produce steam, to drying processes in the food industry, which is proven to currently emit significant amounts of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). 3. 8. CFD investigation of a unit cell inside a Plate Heat Exchanger

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för energivetenskaper

    Author : Mattias Ly; [2023]
    Keywords : Plate Heat Exchanger; CFD; Computational Fluid Dynamics; LES; Large Eddy Simulation; Periodic; Unit Cell; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : A numerical investigation of the unit cell approach has been done to reduce the computational cost for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) of plate heat exchangers (PHE) at Alfa Laval. The reduced cost would enable LES (Large Eddy Simulation) to be done which would give a more detailed and accurate insight into the flow and heat transfer processes of the PHE. READ MORE

  4. 9. A coupling method using CFD, radiative models and a surface model to simulate the micro-climate

    University essay from KTH/Teknisk mekanik

    Author : Joseph Vernier; [2023]
    Keywords : Computational Fluid Dynamics; Fluid Mechanics; Numerics; Micro-climate modeling; Radiation; Crop modeling; Photovoltaic panels;

    Abstract : The increasing demand for energy, depletion of fossil fuels, rising global warming, and greenhouse gas emissions have stimulated the need for widespread development and adoption of renewable energy sources (RES) worldwide. Among these sources, solar energy has emerged as a major contender to meet the growing demand. READ MORE

  5. 10. Phase Unwrapping MRI Flow Measurements

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Avdelningen Vi3

    Author : Mio Liljeblad; [2023]
    Keywords : phase unwrapping; computer vision; cine MRI; NMR; flow measurements; velocity encoding; venc; energy minimization; magnetic resonance; cardiac MRI; sinotubuar junction; pulmonary artery; ascending descending aorta; laplacian algorithm; iterative graph cuts; IGC; sequential tree-reweighted message passing; TRW-S; velocity to noise ratio; VNR; retrospective wrapping; energy formulation;

    Abstract : Magnetic resonance images (MRI) are acquired by sampling the current of induced electromotiveforce (EMF). EMF is induced due to flux of the net magnetic field from coherent nuclear spins with intrinsic magnetic dipole moments. READ MORE
