Poché and Blank: Contradiction Between Inside and Outside

University essay from KTH/Arkitektur

Abstract: Gasverket is a unique area in Stockholm. It is an industrial area that has been closed to the public for over a hundred years, but which retains both history and the noticeable brick architecture. I selected Gasklocka 1 as the specific site location. The noticeable facade and cylindrical volume make it a landmark that serves the city from the outside. But, what about the inside space...? I started by researching [Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture] by Robert Venturi, and continue by studying the term called [poché] that is mentioned in the book of Robert Venturi as my spatial strategy.  My project aims to create a multi-function community within the existing brick facade, but in contrast to the existing brick facade in terms of function,  material, space, order, and atmosphere. I hope to encourage people not only to share the history of the past in this project, but also to create memories for the future together.
