Naturvårdsrestriktioners effekter på brukandet av ädellövskogen i Skåne

University essay from SLU/Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre

Abstract: Restrictions in nature conservations are increasing the influence of forest management. Nobel broadleaved forests are more influenced than other forests, because they are considered to be more valuable than other forest types in Skåne. There has been a lack of knowledge about the amount that is set-aside for nature conservation and what types of forest that is concerned. These are the main questions to be answered in this thesis. Moreover has the timber quality been compared between set-aside and non-set-aside areas since it affect the financial conditions for the forestry in nobel broadleved forests. The last asked question deals with the financial consequences of set-aside. The thesis is limited to Scania. The work is based on data from forest management plans from Södra Skogsägarna. The aim of set-aside is too keep the biodiversity and to reach environmental political goals. Forest land is set aside either voluntarily by the forest owner or by the government as Governmental set-aside. Voluntarily set-aside are areas which the owner have decided to setaside. These include areas which are left without management for protection (NO) and areas where the land needs maintenance too keep the biodiversity (NS). Governmental set-aside areas are nature reserves and other kinds of reserves where the owner has been compensated by the government. The result shows that biotope set-aside is the most common of the official set-aside. Voluntarily set aside is in total volume, 11.5 % of the beech, 26.6 % of the oak and 30.7 % of the other nobel tree species is set-aside. The quality of the timber in the set-aside stands is lower than in stands without protection. To estimate the financial consequences of the set-asides for nature conservation, different management alternatives was applied for beech respectively oak. The volumes and assortments of the timber quality was the base data for the economical calculations. The present values were greatest in the best quality and highest site index. The lowest cost for setaside was in the lowest site index with lowest site index. The majority of the set-aside areas had a low timber quality and was therefore more economically favourable to set aside than stands with higher timber quality.
