  1. 16. The Hitchhiker's Guide to Irony

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Engelska

    Author : Simon Torffvit; [2022]
    Keywords : irony; humor; principle of relevance; literature teaching; English as a Foreign Language; EFL; maxims of conversation; close reading; The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy; Languages and Literatures;

    Abstract : In this paper, I explore how Douglas Adams’ comedic 1979 science-fiction novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy could be used to improve English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ understanding of irony. Specifically, the study is based on criteria for the English 5 course in Swedish upper secondary school and is performed using a combined theoretical framework of Dan Sperber and Deidre Wilson’s principle of relevance and Paul Grice’s maxims of conversation. 2. 17. Birefringence: Effects and Implications on In-Ice Radio Detection of High-Energy Neutrinos

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Högenergifysik

    Author : Nils Heyer; [2022]
    Keywords : Birefringence; Cosmic Neutrinos; In-ice radio propagation;

    Abstract : The detection of high-energy neutrinos in the EeV range requires new detection techniques to cope with the small expected flux. The radio detection method, utilizing Askaryan emission, can be used to detect these neutrinos in polar ice. READ MORE

  3. 18. Starbursts at Cosmic Dawn : Formation of Globular Clusters, Ultra-Faint Dwarfs, and Population III star clusters at z > 6

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för astronomi

    Author : Olof Nebrin; [2022]
    Keywords : Cosmology; Galaxy Formation; Globular Clusters; First Stars; Dark Matter; Cosmic Dawn; Reionization; Ultra-Faint Dwarfs;

    Abstract : In the standard model of cosmology (ΛCDM) the first stars, star clusters, and galaxies are expected to have formed in short bursts of star formation in low-mass dark matter halos at high redshifts (). Up to this point, attempts to predict the properties and abundances of these luminous objects have made use of numerically expensive cosmological simulations. READ MORE

  4. 19. Spin correlations in top quark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Teoretisk partikelfysik - Geonomgår omorganisation

    Author : Simon Ahlstedt; [2022]
    Keywords : Top quarks; Top quark pair production; LHC; Spin correlations; MadGraph5_aMC@NLO; Dilepton decay channel; Leading order; Interference effects; Event generation.; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : In this work we investigate the spin correlation effect of the interference between signal and irreducible background events present in top quark pair production at the LHC at LO in the dilepton channel. To simulate the high energy proton-proton collisions of the LHC, MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework is used as an event generator. READ MORE

  5. 20. Complementarity of high energy and high intensity experiments for dark photon benchmarks

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Partikel- och kärnfysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Joshua Greaves; [2022]
    Keywords : Dark matter; LDMX; Dark photon; Complementarity; Snowmass; Relic density; Thermal relic; Relic abundance; Cross section; Constraints; Limits; Minimal models; Energy frontier; Intensity frontier; Madgraph; Madanalysis; Vector mediated; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : Physical phenomena that are unexplained by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, are the subject of the area of research known as physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). BSM physics contains many Dark Matter (DM) theories which have emerged; from particles such as axions, neutrinos, and Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), to primordial black holes and others.
