36. Elemental variability in tree-rings as indicator for climate change : a case study on beech and oak trees at the Laacher See, Germany
University essay from Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografiAbstract : The aim of this study was to contribute to the comprehension of the connection of element uptake in trees at the Laacher See in Germany and climatic parameters on different time scales. Understanding the relationship of certain elements in trees and temperature might enable the assignment of extraordinary high peaks in the elemental concentration, which cannot be explained by temperature, to another process as CO2 degassing of the mofettes, which are relics of the volcanic past of the lake. 37. Mapping the market of unrefined forest industry by-products in northern Sweden : industry by-product variation, county supply-demand balance, and optimization of transport cost
University essay from SLU/Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology (from 131204)Abstract : The forest industry plays an important role in the climate system. The need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases is emergent, from a global perspective they are the driving force behind climate change. 38.
39. Analysis of polyfunctional thiols in beer : Developing a novel method of extraction and analysis using GC-FID
University essay from Lunds universitet/Livsmedelsteknik och nutrition (master)Abstract : In this project, attempts were made to identify and quantify two polyfunctional thiols – 4-mercapto-4-methyl-pentanone and 3-mercaptohexyl acetate – and three monoterpene alcohols – linalool, geraniol, and β-citronellol – in beer samples. In order to avoid the use of hazardous compounds such as dichloromethane and hydroxymercuriobenzoate, common in traditional methods, two novel techniques were tested: a pure liquid-liquid extraction of the beer samples with cyclohexane, and a liquid-liquid extraction with cyclohexane followed by solid phase extraction on silver ion columns. 40. Utvärdering av metod för att morfologiskt särskilja björkarterna Betula pendula och Betula pubescens
University essay from SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and ManagementAbstract : Birch is the third most common tree species in Sweden and has previously been seen as a weed in the forests. In the last 20 years, birch has had a clearly increasing trend in Swedens growing timber stock, but there are still many knowledge gaps regarding management, regeneration, processing, and its impact on the environment.
