  1. 1. Antarctic Subglacial Lakes as Environmental Analogues for Possible Hidden Biospheres on the Moons Europa and Enceladus

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Jonas Fahlman; [2023]
    Keywords : astrobiology; icy moons; subglacial lakes; ice dynamics; thermal regimes; extremophiles; anthropogenic contamination; astrobiologi; ismånar; subglaciala sjöar; is-dynamik; termiska regimer; extremofiler; antropologisk kontaminering;

    Abstract : The evolving science of astrobiology for the search for life beyond Earth has put focus on the possibility of subsurface bodies of liquid water beneath the surface of icy moons within our Solar System. Specifically, the Jovian moon of Europa and the Saturnian moon of Enceladus show telling characteristics of endogenous heating through their complex tidal resonances with their parent planets – suggesting the presence of oceans of liquid water and therefore a potential for astrobiology. 2. 2. Search for Preserved Methanogenic Organisms in Ophiolitic Rocks through Lipid Biomarker Analysis – Implications for Astrobiological Explorations

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Alexandra Zetterlind; [2020]
    Keywords : ophiolite; deep biosphere; archaea; methanogenesis; chemosynthesis; serpentinite-hosted ecosystems; lipid biomarkers; astrobiology; ofiolit; djupbiosfär; arkeér; metanogener; kemosyntes; serpentinit-drivna ekosystem; lipidbiomarkörer; astrobiologi;

    Abstract : Serpentinization is a metamorphic low-temperature geological process, involving a series of chemical reactions that hydrate ultramafic rocks into serpentines and other minerals such as magnetite and brucite. Moreover, the process produces heavily reducing and highly alkaline fluids together with molecular hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4), which have the capacity to support chemosynthetic microbial life. 3. 3. Methods and Approaches for Biogenicity Determination in Geological Samples - Implications for Extraterrestrial Search for Life

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Alexandra Zetterlind; [2018]
    Keywords : Biogenicity; microscopy; fossilized microorganisms; astrobiology; Biogenecitet; mikroskopering; fossiliserade mikroorganismer; astrobiologi;

    Abstract : For a better understanding of how to search for an extraterrestrial life, scientists study hidden biospheres on Earth. The subseafloor crust is recognized as a vast microbial habitat and it is hypothesized that extremophilic microorganisms, occurring there, can be the first living organisms on Earth. READ MORE

  4. 4. Early life and its implications for astrobiology : a case study from Bitter Springs Chert, Australia

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Geologiska institutionen

    Author : Hanna Sigeman; [2013]
    Keywords : FTIR; XRF; SEM; microfossil; stromatolites; Amadeus Basin; Bitter Springs; origin of life; microorganisms; exobiology; early life; astrobiology; tidigt liv; astrobiologi; exobiologi; mikroorganismer; livets ursprung; stromatoliter; mikrofossil; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Early life research faces additional challenges than those of the study of later life forms. Due to the de-materialization of the earliest rocks, valuable information about the early Earth is forever lost. Furthermore, early life was small and morphologically basic, effectuating abiotic pseudofossils to infiltrate the fossil record. READ MORE
