  1. 1. Non-linear effects in the ATLAS track-counting luminosity measurement

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Högenergifysik

    Author : Daniel Gautam; [2023]
    Keywords : Particle physics; CERN; ATLAS; Track counting; Luminosity; Monte Carlo; Track Selection;

    Abstract : In this thesis the linearity of the ATLAS track-counting luminosity measurement is studied using two different sets Monte Carlo simulated crossings of proton-proton bunches. A primary high-momentum, or hard, interaction must be chosen for the Monte Carlo simulation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determining backgrounds with misidentified leptons in the ATLAS Higgs boson analysis

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Leo Qiyuan Hu; [2023]
    Keywords : Particle Physics; ATLAS detector; Fake Factor method; Higgs boson; lepton misreconstruction; misidentified events; Partikelfysik; ATLAS detektorn; Fake Factor-metoden; Higgs boson; lepton felrekonstruktion; felidentifierade händelser;

    Abstract : This thesis presents an analysis of misidentified leptons in the Higgs boson decaychannel H → W W ∗ → lνlν. Misidentified leptons, resulting from jets misidentifiedas leptons, mimic the signal of a Higgs boson decay, resulting in a backgroundcontribution to the signal. READ MORE

  3. 3. Investigation of Ion Extraction Anomalies at TwinEBIS

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Partikel- och kärnfysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Niek van Woudenberg; [2023]
    Keywords : CERN; ISOLDE; Ion Source; EBIS; REXEBIS; TwinEBIS; Ion losses; Charge Breeding; Ion Extraction; CST Studio Suite; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : The electron beam ion source REXEBIS at CERN-ISOLDE delivers highly-charged ra- dioactive ions for post-acceleration in the HIE-ISOLDE LINAC. Research and develop- ment of components for electron beam ion sources is carried out at the TwinEBIS test stand, currently equipped with a Brillouin electron gun called MEDeGUN. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studying Elliptic Flow in High Centrality Pb-Pb Collisions using Proton Collision Background Fitting

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen; Lunds universitet/Partikel- och kärnfysik

    Author : Philip Fredholm; [2023]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : In this report, the elliptic flow in high centrality Pb-Pb collisions is calculated using two particle correlations $v_2\{2\}$ but without any imposed separation in η with data taken from the ALICE experiment at CERN in 2015. Instead, measurements of the same correlations in proton-proton collisions is used as a background to account for non-flow effects and data is correlated between the time projection chamber and the forward multiplicity detectors in order to avoid intra-jet correlations. 5. 5. Upgrade of the LHCb simulation framework with advanced particle event generators

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Ruben Pozzi; [2023]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The LHCb experiment is one of the main detectors in function at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. In order to interpret the data recorded by the detector, Monte Carlo (MC) samples are used as a way to validate and test theories by comparison with the experimental data. READ MORE
