Elementkoncentrationer i gran utmed en markfuktighetsgradient

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Forest Soils

Abstract: One key factor in silviculture today is sustainability. In order to achieve sustainability it may be important to restore lost nutrients to the forest after clearcutting. In order to calculate the removal, you need to know how much of different elements you will find in different tree compartments. The aim of this study was to investigate if the concentration of elements in different tree compartments of spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) were related to the moisture conditions of the site. Five plots at Risfallet (60º 21´ N, 16º 13´ E), was placed along a moisture gradient in a 40- year spruce stand. Stemwood, bark, branches and needles were analysed for 25 different elements. Most elements did not show any significant variation with the site moisture but there were some important exceptions. The concentration of Cd in needles was twice as high on peat compared with mineral soil and Al and K in needles had the highest concentration on the mineral soil. K did have the highest concentrations close to the border between groundwater recharge and discharge areas, Mg did have the highest concentrations in the groundwater discharge area. The concentration of the elements B, Sr, Na, Si, Cu, Zr, Zn, Mn, N and Ti did not affect by the moisture in the soil along the gradient. The rest of the elements (Co, Cr, V, Mg, Ni and Ca) showed tendencies to vary with soilmoisture but the observed differencies were not statistically significant.
