Abstract: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the influence of aqueous radiation induced oxidants on stainless steel. This was done by exposing the steel to both radiation and chemically added oxidants under ambient conditions, i.e. in and near room temperature. When water is exposed to radiation several oxidizing species are formed, including hydrogen peroxide, which have been known to increase the risk for corrosion of other materials. Stainless steel is used in many parts in a nuclear power plant, and the results from this thesis could be useful when elucidating whether the steel is an appropriate material to use for these applications.
