  1. 6. Design of compact automotive heat exchanger, analysing the effects of RANS models and utilising Additive Manufacturing

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Nikhil Srikkanth; Bartosz Brzuchalski; [2022]
    Keywords : Turbulence; Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes; KTH Formula Student; metal additive manufacturing; CFD; turbulent kinetic energy; boundary layer;

    Abstract : The analytical modelling of complex turbulent airflow remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of physics, but in this paper two widely used Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes models (k-$\epsilon$ and k-$\omega$ SST) are compared while designing a heat exchanger for the KTH Formula Student electric race car. CAD software was used to design lattices for the heat exchanger core and theorise about how to increase heat transfer while also taking into account the utilisation of metal additive manufacturing. 2. 7. Geometrical Improvement of Fuel Nozzle Locations in the SGT-750 Gas Turbine : An investigation into fuel-air mixing in main channels 1 & 2

    University essay from Linköpings universitet/Mekanisk värmeteori och strömningslära

    Author : Aryan Delir; [2022]
    Keywords : gas turbine engines; turbofan; combustion; SGT-750; flashback; hydrogen; natural gas; premixing; fuel-air mixing; computational fluid dynamics; CFD; turbulence modelling; NOx emission; lean premixed mixture;

    Abstract : This study was conducted on SGT-750, which utilizes can type fourth generation DLE burner, developed at Siemens Energy AB, in Finspång, Sweden. The aim of this study is to obtain a flat fuel profile at the outlet of main channel 1 and main channel 2, demonstrating a proper mixing of fuel and air in the main channels leading to reducing local high-temperature points, and thus, reducing thermal NOx emissions. 3. 8. CFD Based External Heat Transfer Coefficient Predictions on a Transonic Film-Cooled Gas Turbine Guide Vane : A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on the Von Karman Institute LS94 Test Case

    University essay from Linköpings universitet/Mekanisk värmeteori och strömningslära

    Author : Rosalie Johnsson; Lilian Asiegbu; [2022]
    Keywords : gas turbine; turbine inlet guide vane; film-cool; film cool; Computational Fluid Dynamics; CFD; heat transfer coefficient; Shear Stress Transport k-ω; SST k-ω; Scale Resolving Hybrid; SRH; turbulence modelling;

    Abstract : The turbine inlet guide vanes of a gas-turbine are subjected to extreme hot gas temperatures which increases the risk of mechanical failure and overall reduces the component lifespan. Hence, it is of great interest for gas-turbine manufacturers to establish methods for accurately estimating the temperature distribution along the vane surface. READ MORE

  4. 9. Deep learning for non-intrusive sensing in turbulence with passive scalars

    University essay from KTH/Strömningsmekanik och Teknisk Akustik

    Author : Arivazhagan Geetha Balasubramanian; [2021]
    Keywords : Turbulent boundary layer; passive scalar; direct numerical simulation; Prandtl number; Machine learning; convolutional neural network; Turbulent gränsskikt; passiv skalär; direkt numerisk simulering; Prandtl-nummer; maskininlärning; faltningsneurala nätverk;

    Abstract : The near-wall modelling of turbulent flows has been an active field of research due to the computational cost associated with the direct numerical simulations of such flow, which are characterized by a wide range of length and time scales. With the recent advancements in technological capabilities, the availability of high-fidelity data has enabled the construction of data-driven approaches to model turbulence. READ MORE

  5. 10. Verification of the local similarity theory above forests

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Yasmin Hubmann; [2021]
    Keywords : Forest Meteorology; Boundary Layer Meteorology; Wind Energy; Local Similarity Theory; Monin–Obukhov Similarity Theory; Flux-Gradient Formulation; Richardson Number Formulation; Turbulence Statistic; Rotor Equivalent Wind Speed; Grenzschicht-Meteorologie; Forstmeteorologie; Windenergie; Lokale Ähnlichkeitstheorie; Monin–Obukhov’sche Ähnlichkeitstheorie; Fluss-Gradient-Ähnlichkeit; Gradient-Richardson-Zahl Beziehung; Turbulenzcharakteristiken; Rotor-äquivalente Windgeschwindigkeit; Skogsmeteorologi; Gränsskiktsmeteorologi; Vindenergi; Lokal Similaritetsteori; Monin–Obukhov Similaritetsteori; Flöd-Gradient Relation; Richardson Gradienttal Relation;

    Abstract : In this study, the local similarity theory functions were calculated with two different approaches and on the other hand the mean hub height wind speed was compared with the rotor equivalent wind speed. Both calculations are based on two independent data-sets from measurement campaigns Hornamossen and Ryningsnäs which were conducted in the south of Sweden between May 2015 and June 2017, and November 2010 and February 2012.
