   Abstract : This study aims at applying the livelihood strategy approach in understanding how women in a suburban area deal with the choices in economic activities in order to create their livelihood strategy. Using qualitative interviews of women in Nhu Quynh town (Van Lam district, Hung Yen province), a suburban area of Hanoi City, and the study explores livelihood strategies of women before and after 1997, when the Nhu Quynh commune was reclassified into an urban area.
