    Abstract : This thesis aims at understanding, from a world-system analytical and decolonial perspective, the structural causes behind the outbreak of the Tipnis-conflict in Bolivia in 2011. Through interviews with representatives from the governmental party MAS and social movements that have taken up different positions in the conflict, and in dialogue with world-system analytical and decolonial theorists, the thesis argues that the conflict to a certain extent can be seen as an articulation of what Colombian social scientist Arturo Escobar regards as a partly antagonistic tension between two different emancipatory projects within the Bolivian “Process of Change”: on the one hand a political struggle against neo-liberalism to form an alternative, more inclusive, modernity while improving the relative position of the Bolivian state in the world interstate system; on the other hand a struggle for transforming Bolivian society beyond the bounds of modernity, in order to form a post-liberal political project that would constitute an alternative to modernity.
