Cuba made the first draft in the making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

University essay from Lunds universitet/Mänskliga rättigheter

Abstract: With this research I have answered the twofold question of how Cuba played a part in the making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and what differences and similarities that can be found between the Cuban draft of Human Rights versus the final product of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since there is no previous research in this field I have chosen to look at some of the most renowned historians in the area of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the history of Cuba to find some context for my research. By systematically going through and picking out the most relevant meeting documents of the UN, I found that Cuba was first when it came to making a suggestion for human rights to be a part of the first session of the first part of the General Assembly, they were also first to make a draft of Human Rights. I have then made a content analysis to analyze the differences and similarities of the Cuban draft and the declaration. Using Martha Nussbaum's list of ten capabilities to structure the rights of the documents, I have found that there are more similarities than differences between the two. The conclusion is that I believe that Cuba played a big part in the making of the declaration, but they did not get any acknowledgement in the history of the declaration.
