University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi; Lunds universitet/LUMID International Master programme in applied International Development and Management

Abstract: This study focuses on addressing the development challenge of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in the ready-made garments (RMG) industry factories in Bangladesh. The importance of studying this challenge lies in its direct impact on workers' health, well-being, productivity, and overall socio-economic development. Bangladesh's prominence in the global textile industry and the RMG sector's significant contribution to the country's economy make it an ideal focus area. Challenges in the RMG sector related to WASH facilities and knowledge have adverse effects on workers, especially women, and their productivity. The study highlights pressing global WASH challenges, including water scarcity, inadequate sanitation facilities, and poor hygiene practices, which have far-reaching implications for public health, social development, and economic growth. By implementing the WaterAid Bangladesh (WAB) WASH initiative, observable infrastructure improvements are expected in the selected factories, positively impacting workers' health and overall well-being. The project's approach also extends to local communities and schools, contributing to community development and empowering women who face additional challenges related to WASH in their households and educational institutions. Addressing these multifaceted challenges is essential for sustainable development and improving the health and well-being of populations.
