Euthanasi : avlivning av häst

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Animal Environment and Health

Abstract: The term euthanasia is derived from the Greek terms eu meaning good and thanatos meaning death, "good death". The penetrating captive bolt is an effective method of euthanasia, when use of drugs is inappropriate. The horse becomes immediately unconscious and falls to the ground. First after the blood is emptied from the body the horse is dead. The use of injectable euthanasia agents is a rapid and reliable method of performing euthanasia. The aim is to stop the flow of oxygenated blood to vital organs and tissues. The muscle relaxants may be used either in combination wih or following an anaesthetic dose of barbiturate, their use use as a sole agent is totally inhumane. Somulose is indicated for the euthanasia of cats, dogs, horses and cattle. Active ingredients are Quinalbarbitone Sodium and Cinchocaine Hydrochloride. Quinalbarbitone Sodium is a hypnotic derivate of barbituric acid with a rapid onset of action, wich profoundly depresses the central nervous system, including the respiratory centres. Cinchocaine Hydrochloride has marked cardiotoxic effects at high doses. Cremation means that the body burns in a big oven. This process takes about for hours and the weight of the ashes after a horse will be about 25 to 30 kilos. When you take the horse the slaughterhouse you need a horse-passport. That has to be controlled, by a veterinary, so that the horse is clean from drugs. To bury the horse at your own proporties you need a permission from both the communtiy and the veterinary unit in Länstyrelsen. The only undertakers within the nordic countries is based in Malmö, NordiskArk.
