University essay from SLU/Dept. of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (from 130101)

Abstract: The study assumes children's right to be a part of participation and having a larger role in the development and planning for society. Preschools are important places for children, and the question regarding how children can become more active in the planning processes of shaping the outdoor environment is the main focus area of this study. The study was carried out within the premises of a preschool in the city of Lund, where different methods and tools were utilized in order to implement the children in the participation process. The study finds that there are certain principles that are better in order to communicate with younger children. The methods are also important to understand how children perceive their outdoor environment. The discussion concludes that participation methods to evolve children's outdoor environment might be more concrete, e.g. through management plans. The study concludes that the general perspective of children's participation in planning and development needs to be changed in order to promote a more long-term plan for the participation process for younger children.
