Abstract: The oil and gas industry is an activity that simultaneously resembles formula one and space missions. By the formula one´s side, it operates close to technological limits. And by the space missions’ side, several experimental or semi-experimental technologies are broadly used. O&G industry is indeed a high-risk socio-technical system.” (Eder Henriqson, personal communication) Such a statement could lead the reader to think that the offshore well construction branch of the O&G industry has very advanced management and training requirements. Moreover, it could also lead to the feeling that training procedures adhere to the workplace reality. And a trustful environment where skilled professionals may raise concerns about daily uncertainties and ambiguities during operations. This research investigates whether those claims are a reality of the current company man´s workplace. However, findings underpinned by semi-structured interviews showed that commandand-control practices, increasing bureaucracy, and safety expectations heavily focused on individuals are often prevalent management traces. Thus, the research goal focuses on recognize leverage points to improve, by recommendations at the systems level, the company man´s workplace.
