An analysis of the economic costs of natural disasters in the Philippines - does the natural disaster type matter?

University essay from Lunds universitet/Nationalekonomiska institutionen

Abstract: Ranked as the most disaster prone country in the world by the World Risk Index, the people of the Philippines have had their fair share of natural disasters and will probably continue to be affected by them in the future. With the help of The International Disaster Database the purpose of this paper is to analyze if the actual type of natural disaster has an impacct on the total direct economic damages done. I will then continue with an analysis on why this might be the case and then conclude with a discussion about potential areas that could be improved to mitigate these costs in the future using the Disaster Risk Index.
