UÅ : växtförslag på skuggtoleranta lignoser för Umeå

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (from 130101)

Abstract: When large parts of Umeå burned down in 1888, birches were planted along the city's streets to prevent the spread of fires and even today there are many birches planted in the city. That is why Umeå is also known as the city of birches. Today, a densification process is under way in Umeå, which will affect the light supply in certain places. This means that other alternatives to the light-demanding birch must be used. The purpose of this literature study has been to investigate plant material that could have the potential to function in Umeå. Based on the geographical situation and the envisaged environment, the work includes the subjects of shade tolerance, hardiness and provenance as it affects and can limit the choice of plants. The main focus of the work has been trees and based on the information gathered, various woody plants have been proposed which for various reasons could have the potential to function in Umeå with a focus on the ongoing densification.
